Welcome to Mr. Noon's Class Web Page
Welcome to Mr. Noon's page on the Yreka Union High School District web site. The 2011-2012 year will be my 35th year at Yreka High School.
I am teaching one period of Biology, three of Chemistry and one of Honors Chemistry. In past years I have taught Algebra I and Algebra II and head-coached a variety of sports including Varsity Volleyball, Soccer, frosh Basketball, Wrestling and Tennis, and assisted in cross-country.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from UC Riverside with an emphasis in pre-med (Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Physics) and a Master’s degree in Ecology (Biochemistry and Wildlife Biology) from UC Davis. My teaching credential is also from UC Davis.
I played collegiate soccer at UC Riverside.
I am currently Science Department Chairman, and have held that position off and on for about 20 years. The Science department is very proud of our recent STAR test (CST test) scores in that a large percentage (up to 78%) of our students have scored in the Proficient and Advanced ranges, while very few have scored in the Below Basic and Far Below Basic ranges. All of our classes are California Science Standards-based. We have designed many labs to fit the California State Standards, and all of our classes are lab-based. We have common finals (December) and common midterms (late April). We are constantly working to upgrade our curriculum and labs. We have incorporated lab-based computer technology (software and probe-ware from Pasco Scientific, BioRad and others) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and will introduce technology into our Integrated Science classes this year. In addition to learning important concepts of every day life, we feel that our courses will give students a superior preparation for a four-year college or university of their choice. We have received very positive feedback from students who have attended these institutions of higher learning. We make every effort to maintain our state-of-the-art classrooms and instruction. Yreka has received an "A+" rating, in part due to the efforts of the Science department.
New this year (to the Science Department) is a "no D" policy in Biology and Chemistry.
